​The Constructor Table is an energy saving furniture solution, designed to use locally sourced concrete blocks to add weight.

Problem: Furniture designs for public spaces are often made from heavy materials, such as cast iron, to keep them in place and discourage unwanted removal. This heavy mass demands greater energy expenditure to transport, made worse when combined with large distances between the manufacturer and customer.

Concept: The Constructor Table is shipped as a flat packed frame and tabletop, then weight is added as necessary using locally sourced concrete blocks. For moving or disassembly, the blocks can be extracted faster and cleaner than other ‘weight-adding solutions’, such as water tanks or stone filled gabions.

Motive: Due to the huge demand for blocks in construction, there are many manufacturers of concrete blocks throughout the UK, who in turn supply local builder’s merchants to create a vast distribution network.
Blocks are produced using locally sourced raw materials and include recycled aggregate, with any waste being recycled back into production. Bulk manufacturing drives down costs as low as £1.20 per block, making them much better value compared to other materials.

Design: The Constructor Table’s dimensions are directly related to the standard 440 x 215mm blocks, taking into consideration their permitted dimensional tolerances of +3 to -5mm. Variations of blocks with different weights or surface finishes are available, and chosen according to customer preference.

Longevity: Thanks to its durable powder coating, the table will have a long life and cope with heavy use. In the instance where just one leg becomes damaged, it alone can be unbolted and replaced, due to the identical positioning of the fixing points on each component.

Damage reduction: The concrete block is supported by rubber pads in each corner, which also contain fixings to attach footpads to the underside.

DIY: The tabletop can be easily removed and refinished, or replaced with another of differing size or material should the customer wish. The concrete blocks can be protected with masonry paint, and periodically refinished to keep them fresh or change their colour, just as you would with walls.
